As you know, the remoteness of Ponca, Arkansas and its ability to remain one of the few places left in America where "time stands still" are two of the primary reasons we all love it here so very much. However, many of our guest---even though here to escape connection overload---have shared that they would still like the option to check on family and friends, tap into what's going on out there in the big, wide world, even do some shopping or post a photo of something they just experienced---without having to rely on cell service to do it.

While hiking in the Richland Creek area over the weekend, Zach Ledbetter came across this wonderful fossil. According to John McFarland, retired chief geologist for the state of Arkansas and Buffalo River lover, it is a orthoconic nautiloid. So, while it looks like a fish, it is actually kin to the chambered nautilus! Here's more of what Professor McFarland (who, in retirement, still shares his geology expertise in the classroom at North Arkansas Community College) has to say about this creature of ancient Buffalo River life:
Nautiloids belong to the Phylum Mollusca, Class Cephalopoda, Subclass Nautiloidea. Their closest living descendant is the Chambered Nautilus.
