Whatever your Buffalo River adventure plans, it’s always wise to be prepared for less-than-ideal conditions. You’ll enjoy your trip far more if you’re warm and dry, or in the case of warmer weather, protected from life’s little discomforts such as sunburn or tick and chigger bites!

The good news is that with some common sense and a little preparation, you can enjoy ANY season on the Buffalo. Here is a quick reference chart that gives you some basic information about weather, climate, and how to prepare for them. However, keep your personal tolerance for cold, heat, etc., in mind, using this information as a guideline only.

Month/WeatherWhat to ExpectWhat to Wear/Bring
January & February Cold weather; 30 – 40 degree daytime temps on avg.; occasional warmer days (low 50’s) in Feb.; great time to hike, especially a few days after a winter storm

Layers of clothing and a warm weather-resistant coat; warm gloves and hat are a must; high-carb snacks good idea for long hikes
March water temps; daytime air temps can vary from 40’s to 70’s; can be a rainy, blustery month; typical consistent rainfall makes for great floating Quick-drying, layered clothing such as fleece or nylon, preferrably not of cotton; water resistant jacket with hood helpful; good month for wet suit apparel (we rent these at the store); bring long- and short-sleeved shirts; bring more pants than shorts
April Cool water temps; daytime air temps range from mid-50’s to upper 70’s; can be rainy at times Similar to the March list, only you can plan on having warmer days that allow for wearing shorts more often; wet suits still not a bad idea on certain days; time to start using the bug spray on hikes
May Water warm enough to swim in; daytime temps moving into the low-to-mid 80’s; rain protection less a factor as the weather is warmer Bring something long-sleeved and/or long pants; otherwise shorts and swim suits begin to rule the day; a light rain jacket with a hood is smart; bug spray and sunscreen wise
June Warm but not hot until month end when air temps creep to upper 80’s/low 90’s; can still rain some Nights can still be a little cool early in the month, but days are generally nice and warm; bring bug spray and sunscreen or get it at our store
July – August Cool weather and floating is over, but hiking is still great and swimming holes are the place to be. Whatever is cool and comfortable; don’t forget sunscreen, water, and bug spray
September Still warm, with air temps moving to upper 70’s and low 80’s mid-month; cooler nights also begin to appear Clothing for warm days and cooler nights; a light jacket is a good idea
October Wonderful Indian summer days; comfortably warm in the day, cooler at night; hiking and camping are popular. Shorts and short-sleeves still good to have on hand, but bring pants and a jacket, too; rain-resistant jacket also a good idea
November Air temps continue to cool, mixed with days that climb into the mid-60’s; another great month to be here; some rainy days Much like October, only more cool weather clothing
December First of the month daytime temps generally hang in the 40’s to 50’s, although cold weather is very possible; usually a few snowy days Winter is coming on, but fall is still hanging around, too; wear layers of clothing that allow you to adjust to changes in air temps, mild or cold
