Buffalo National River Still Open During Government Shutdown | Buffalo Outdoor Center

The federal government may be shut down, but the Buffalo National River is OPEN for visitor enjoyment, including hiking, camping, elk watching and even river running (water level permitting).  In the Ponca area, only the Lost Valley Trail is closed due to a major renovation project that is presently underway.  (Learn more about the National Park Service’s Lost Valley improvement project.)

Throughout the park, National Park Service visitor centers and flush-toilet facilities will be closed during the shutdown.  Campgrounds remain open, including vault toilets in campgrounds and at river accesses.

Fortunately, BOC is able to provide vehicle shuttle services to hikers and paddlers during the shutdown.  Our winter hours are 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM, 7 days a week.  Please note that on Christmas Day, our office and shuttle services will be available from 9:00 AM – 3:00 PM.

**NPS law enforcement services are unavailable within the park during the shutdown.  Here is the official Buffalo National River NPS statement regarding shutdown closures and limited services.**
