Overview

A great hike to an amazing view of the Buffalo National River and Steel Creek Campground. Complete with wildflowers and waterfalls in the Spring.

Trailhead Directions from Ponca

Take HWY 74 East from Ponca for about two miles. The Steel Creek Campground entrance will be on your left. There is a large sign that should be hard to miss. Turn here and follow the paved road down to the campground. When you get to the bottom, the pavement will end. Find a place to park here near the intersection and walk back up the road around 100 feet to access the Buffalo River Trail.  Follow the trail to your left that heads toward Kyles Landing (If you go right it will take you to Ponca).

Trip Highlights

Crossing Steel Creek

Just over a half mile into the hike the trail will turn left and cross Steel Creek. During most times in the year you should be able to “rock-hop” across the creek, but during rainy periods this could be a wet crossing. Be prepared to get wet in this situation, and please use caution attempting to cross in high water.

Photographers on the Trail

The Steel Creek overlook is an excellent spot to catch a sunset over the campground during any season! The trail is also a great spot for waterfalls and wildflowers in the Spring and to view a variety of trees changing color in the Fall.

Exercise Caution and Always Keep an Eye on Children

Please exercise caution around the overlook and water crossings, especially if you have children along. They should not be unsupervised for even a moment in this area.
